Our History
SIKOM PeaceNetwork for Development is a non-governmental organization duly registered with the relevant government authority in Kenya. SIKOM was first established as a community self-help group in the year 2001 by a group of reformed warriors and local university students who saw the need to open up a new chapter in conflict prone and development deficient border areas of Pokot districts in Kenya and Uganda. The organization was officially registered as a national NGO in the year 2006 under section 10 of the Non-Governmental Organizations Co-ordination Act, Office of the President, Kenya. “SIKOM” is a Pokot word, which means coming together for a positive course. SIKOM has a functional governing body in Kapenguria town, West Pokot County and implements its programs in North rift region of Kenya particularly in West Pokot County and in the border regions of Turkana, Baringo and Elgeiyo Marakwet. Sikom also extends its programs along the Kenya-Uganda international border referred to as the Lower Karamoja Cluster.
In addressing problems afflicting pastoralist communities in the North rift region and the lower Karamoja Cluster, Sikom designs and implements programs that are specific to the key thematic areas of: Peace and Governance, Climate Action, Health and Nutrition, Gender Mainstreaming and Education Advocacy. Our programs design and implementation are informed by our strategy of operation that include research, effective planning, capacity building and advocacy.
